_mum-told-she-would-never-walk-again-is-competing-to-be-the-world39s-strongest-woman.webp "A mum told she would never walk again after a freak rugby accident is competing to be crowned the world's strongest woman. <br/><br/>Nikki Ellerington, 45, says her sporting dreams were in tatters when she suffered a bad ankle break while playing rugby - with doctors telling her she'd likely never walk again. <br/><br/>After six to eight months of rehabilitation, Nikki defied the odds to take her first steps since her accident and even went on to be able to run 10km within three years. <br/><br/>Determined Nikki wasn't prepared to give up and soon began taking up cross-fit and training to get fit. <br/><br/>In October 2023, she was selected to compete in the over 40s category in the World Finals of the Official Strongman Games in Charleston, West Virginia, US, through an online qualifier.<br/><br/>The mum-of-four spent three days lifting huge weighted stones, sandbags, backpacks and 70kg metal blocks - and finished 21st out of 28 in her category.<br/> <br/>Nikki has also gone on to compete at the Official Strongman Games in England and will soon be heading off to compete in Finland.<br/><br/>Nikki, a personal trainer, from Hull, East Yorkshire, said: \")
_watch-protestors-39paddle-out39-for-pembrokeshire-peoples-rights-to-clean-water.webp "Crowds of protestors made up of surfers, cold water swimmers, kayakers, paddle boarders, coasteering companies, divers, lifeguards, and regular beach-going families took to a Pembrokeshire beach on a sunny weekend this month, with the message of ‘enough is enough, cut the crap!’<br/>As part of the national ‘Surfers Against Sewage’ Paddle Out Protests, campaigners took to the sea at Broad Haven beach on Saturday, May 18 demonstrating to the Government, along with water companies such as Dŵr Cymru, and regulators like Natural Resources Wales the will to stand up for people’s rights to clean water, and that those rightly concerned will not stop until there’s an end to sewage pollution.<br/>Broad Haven Buccaneers surf lifesaving club who were a part of the protests, along with local Blue Tit Chill Swimmers, revealed that the group were forced to cancel four beach lifesaving training days last summer due to sewage pollution.<br/>Also on hand to address the crowds was Pembrokeshire mother Jayne Etherington who offered a stark warning after her daughter Caitlin became seriously ill after becoming infected with e-coli following a swim in the sea at Amroth one August morning, at the height of summer!<br/>With such pollution threatening people’s health, Jayne told the crowd of campiagners: “This is about life and death! It’s about time something changed.”<br/>At the start of the week, the Wales Coast Award winners for 2024 were announced, spotlighting coastal sites achieving supposed ‘high standards’ required to receive what is meant to be a ‘prestigious’ Blue Flag.<br/>Preseli Pembrokeshire was polluted by sewage 7,659 times in 2023, lasting 91,401 hours - that's 10.58 years!<br/>Monitoring was disabled in some locations, so even more sewage could have found its way into our waters last year.<br/>Kate Evans of Planet CIC - one of the organisers of the protest, said: “The event was great - we were really pleased with the turn out.”<br/>Surfers Against Sewage has also created the ‘End Sewage Pollution Manifesto’ which has five very clear, key solutions to end sewage pollution and will be pushing the next Government to adopt their demands and give them their full backing.<br/><br/>Pic: Peter Bounds<br/>Video: Planet CIC")

_colin-firth39s-mr-darcy-shirt-on-display-at-bankfield-museum-in-halifax.webp "Yorkshire Post photographer, Tony Johnson caught up with the exhibition curator Eli Dawson to get a first look at the iconic ‘wet shirt’ worn by Colin Firth in the BBC adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, which will be on public display in Halifax, West Yorkshire, from Saturday 25 May 2024.<br/>During Calderdale’s Year of Culture 2024 (CultureDale), fans of the famous lake scene will be able to get up close to the shirt and the rest of the outfit worn by Colin Firth as Mr Darcy. It will be on show for free at Bankfield Museum in Halifax until Tuesday 24 December 2024.<br/>The classic 1995 TV scene saw Mr Darcy dive into a lake and emerge with his shirt wet and clinging to him, only to be unexpectedly confronted by Elizabeth Bennet, who had rejected his marriage proposal. The scene has been voted by many as their favourite and most memorable TV moment of all time.<br/>Calderdale Council successfully bid for the shirt, and other costumes from significant moments in TV and film history, at a London auction by Cosprop in March 2024 which raised money for arts education charity, the Bright Foundation.<br/>The shirt is accompanied by other key items from Mr Darcy’s outfit, including the breeches, coat, waistcoat and cravat – all on display in Bankfield Museum’s accessible Oak Gallery on the ground floor.<br/>The other items bought at the auction are due to go on display in a new exhibition in 2025, based around costume in TV and film. They include the Gentleman Jack outfit worn by Suranne Jones, the yellow pelisse from the 2020 film adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma, two outfits from Downton Abbey, and the King and Queen’s outfits from The King’s Speech. There will also be opportunities for learning and skills development linked to textiles and the making of the costumes.<br/>Bankfield Museum is free to visit, from Tuesday to Saturday, 10am - 4pm.")
