One in four female small business owners has taken a pay cut in the past year, according to new research.

The survey of 1,000 female small business owners examined how their experience has shifted in the past year and found that the down economy has forced a quarter of these business owners to cut their own pay to keep their businesses afloat.

For those small businesses that have been open for at least a year, many have also raised the price of their product or service (37%), and more than a quarter are actively seeking less expensive resources (27%).

Conducted by Talker Research for Office Depot, the survey found that 53% of female business owners said the past year has been the hardest for their business.

In 2023, respondents expressed challenges with funding (42%) and growing their business (30%), which continue to be the top struggles this year (39% and 30% respectively).

Experiencing fatigue was more of a pain point last year (23%), while marketing is proving to be a greater challenge this year (25%).

However, hard work has paid off for many female small business owners this year, allowing them to reach their 2023 goals: growing profit (goal of 59%, achieved by 26%), gaining more customers (goal of 53%, achieved by 41%) and expanding their business (goal of 28%, achieved by 12%).

And to keep the momentum going, respondents predict they’ll continue to uplevel and succeed through continued revenue growth (63%), gaining more customers (54%) and business expansion (27%).

But success is also about a lot more than dollars and cents. Twenty-one percent of respondents said success is all about making a positive impact in their community and a fifth (21%) included innovation as a success marker.

And while the next year looks to be more positive for female small business owners, there will still be challenges to overcome, with inflation (39%) and funding (25%) serving as the top concerns.

To overcome these challenges, female SBOs are throwing themselves into their work more often — but how much is too much?

Work-life balance improvements have slowed by 15% since last year, as only this year, 58% said their work-life balance has improved since becoming a business owner, compared to 73% who said the same last year.

Women surveyed feel they need to choose between their family and their profession multiple times every month, while one in eight feel this way every week.

And overall, 42% said being a business owner has made it more difficult to balance their outside work responsibilities.

To better balance their work and family life, those surveyed are committed to “cutting back on working hours,” “taking time for quiet reflection” and “being willing to take a day off as necessary.”

For respondents who set up their business in the last year, top reasons include wanting to be one’s own boss (59%), deciding to pursue a passion or hobby (46%) and drive to put an idea into action (41%).

Way back in 1989, Additional Chief Mining Engineer Jaswant Singh Gill led a rescue operation to evacuate 65 mine workers out of a flooded coal mine in West Bengal's Raniganj. The task was so challenging, dangerous and a near-impossibility, that Gill's daredevilry became a legend in itself.

In Mission Raniganj, Akshay Kumar plays Gill, in a script that aims to chronicle the story of the braveheart who believed that even if one worker was alive down under, it was his duty to save him. When almost everyone had given up on the thought of their survival, Gill followed his conviction that the men might be awaiting help and that without having seen with his own eyes he could not conclude that they were dead. The rescue operation which went on for three days, became significantly historical, and one of the bravest rescue operations in the country.

The film aims to narrate this story, which it does beautifully, but not without its over-the-top 'chaotic drama' that is characteristic of every Akshay Kumar film.

The plot is highly engrossing but the screenplay by Vipul Rawal lacks the punch to keep one hooked throughout. Dance sequences are loud and flashy, and at times, too many characters occupy the screen space leading to chaos and confusion. Yet, director Tinu Suresh Desai tries to keep the central narrative going strong and Kumar's larger than life persona adds heft to Gill's character.

The first half is dedicated to explaining the entire structure and framework of the mines, at a reasonably good pace that does not bore you out. The second half is rather slow, and by the end of the film, one comes out thinking that this was an entirely one man driven operation, and not a team effort by everyone involved including government agencies. In terms of his own character, Kumar does exceedingly well but everyone else seems to be playing second fiddle to him, in the film.

Asif, a Muslim married to a Hindu, who, for reasons too convoluted to explain, becomes possessed by the spirit of a transwoman Laxmii. When he is under her spell, Asif ferociously clicks his teeth and even lets out a sort of war cry. We get so many close-ups that I started admiring how clean Akshay's teeth are. As I watched, I also wondered, how many communities will Akshay save? In Airlift, he saved Indian migrants in the Middle East; In Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, he saved women from the humiliation of defecating outdoors; in Padman, he once again came to the rescue, playing a man who creates low-cost sanitary napkins; in Kesari, as Havaldar Ishar Singh, he rescues a fort and Sikh honor; and now as Laxmii, he bats for transgenders and also throws in a few strokes for Muslims and a child with special needs. It's a heavy load. Which might be why his performance feels delivered in auto-pilot mode.

Laxmii is the remake of a Tamil film called Kanchana, written and directed by Raghava Lawrence, who also played the lead in that film. In Kanchana, his character, also called Raghava, isn't heroic. He's a cowardly man, so afraid of ghosts that he sleeps next to his mother and even insists that she accompany him to the bathroom. Some of the pleasure in that film was watching this wimp transform into the avenging angel Kanchana. Raghava has directed Laxmii but perhaps him and co-writers Farhad Samji, Sparsh Khetarpal and Tasha Bhambra who did the adaptation and dialogue, didn't want to risk downsizing their star. So Asif is some sort of ghostbuster. From his first scene itself, he is in savior mode, rescuing people from fraud babas. Kanchana was made in 2011. It's loud, simplistic and problematic in terms of representation. But Raghava created moments of cheesy fun and it was satisfying to see Kanchana ultimately get her revenge. The high pitch and stereotyping has not aged well and so much has been lost in translation. The tweaks to the original have only made this version worse – the interfaith marriage angle is laughably lame. Kiara Advani plays Asif's wife Rashmi. She does little except calisthenic dancing at the Burj Khalifa and widening her eyes as her husband behaves erratically. Rashmi's family disowned her when she ran away with Asif. They are offended that he is Muslim but not one person seems to notice the difference in age. Also Read: Laxmii, Starring Akshay Kumar, Is A Tone-Deaf Horror Comedy The writing is awful. The message of inclusion is noble but also obviously fraudulent because the film itself contradicts it. There is so much shrieking that it might induce a headache and perhaps the worst sin – the ghost, before it enters Asif's body, is basically a wig with a fan behind it.
